Hello all,

As a Newbie to the site I am amazed by the wide variety of experience I see represented here.  I'd like to ask if any of you have found a reputable Self-Publisher or Print-on-Demand company.  I'm making my first serious attempt at having a novel published but my research on Self-Publishers leads me to conclude that the vast majority are merely shams or scams.

What are your experiences with this?

I self-publish on Kindle, and I would have to agree with Blimprider that Amazon try to make it easy to put your books on there. What is harder, though, is promoting your work. I still have not cracked that, so don't expect high sales if you take this route.

Thanks for the input Philip.  I have heard that the promoting is the tough part, no matter the route.  I'm mulling over ideas on that too.  If I get any serious brain storms on it I'll be here to share for sure!  Another writer friend mentioned lulu.com.  I haven't as yet compared the two.

I use Lightning Source. They're owned by Ingram, one of the largest international book distributors in the world. I started with them and discovered Createspace later but I've seen no strong reason to change. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Lulu.com is expensive compared to either of them.

Thank you Milton!  This is exactly the sort of feed-back I was hoping for.  It's kind of scary how many of the Indie "companies" are actually just scammers preying on us starry-eyed(?) authors.

You're welcome. Check out this post. There are a lot of resources for self publishers out there, including groups that will tell you which PODs to avoid. I tend to stay away from the groups that charge for membership. Good luck and good writing, Steen!

To echo what has already been said, I too am a Kindle publisher and found the process easy.  I am about 10K words from completing Book Two in a steampunk trilogy and waiting to make the jump to Createspace or put any serious money into advertising/promoting until all three are up and running.

Of note, I approached a few publishers looking to move my non-steampunk work- like every writer, I had friends who told me that my work was great and so I gave it a shot.  My experience led me to pursue self-publishing and while I may never see a "big money advance" to write my next piece, I feel validated by the number of people who have already read my book.

Good luck, no matter which route you choose to take.

Thanks so much for your insights.  The thing I find most difficult is the learning curves of everything publishing-related.  The writing is the fun ; the self-fulfilling aspect of the creativity.  Worrying about how and where to publish and promote ...well that just kind of gets in the way!  Good luck back-atcha!
