I would think that generally there aren't any hard rules in fiction but something to consider is where and when does the story in question occur? If it is a story that takes place in a time and place that is aware of the subculture movement we call Steampunk (like today or something like today) then perhaps its OK to have a character use the word(s). If it is in a time in history that does not have that subculture than maybe it would take the audience up and out of the context of the story (break the fiction) to read it there. I think it could also be conceivable that you, or someone else, might come up with a story and world logic where you are using the term Steampunk in a context you are establishing for the first time in the story. In essence you'd be redefining or redirecting it as a subculture tag or as a description. I think all these things can work but being very aware of the meaning your audience already brings with them to the reading of it within your story I think is key to consider and then decide to work with or change.Cheers, Kevin
