Introduce yourself!
Hiya! I'm Jha.

I've written for Tor.com, Apex Company Blog, SFFPortal.net. I've also written for Jeff Vandermeer, Racialicious, and Beyond Victoriana.

You might know me as the steampunk postcolonialist of Silver Goggles. My Straits Steampunk stories have been published at Expanded Horizons and Crossed Genres. I finished a Major Research Project for my MA in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory on, uh, steampunk and postcolonialism. Haha.

I'm hoping to go back to school to continue on with the next logical step: neocolonialism and steampunk.
What do you hope to find at The Steampunk Writers & Artists Guild?
1) A lot less racism, conscious or otherwise, than other general steampunk sites.
2) Food. =(
3) Good advice.
4) Information and knowledge-sharing.
How did you hear about us?
How did I not hear about you? Between Steil, Delman and Keyes, that is...

I hate to disappoint you, but Chen is actually my husbands surname. He is the "real" Chinese, I'm about as Swedish as you can get. But it's true that I speak Chinese (mandarin) and I have translated some 20+ novels into Swedish over the years. I never tried writing myself until one of my friends inspired me to participate in NaNoWriMo. I didn't finish, but I ended up with about one quarter of a novel - and discovered that it's fun to write!

My "novel" is based on a true story, about the Chinese reformer/visionary Kang Youwei, who actually lived in Stockholm for a few years in the early 20th century, but the rest is pure fiction.

I read some of your comments in discussions on race/colonialism in steampunk, and I agree with you - I try to avoid falling into those traps myself!

Plus, I work in the most multicultural and multilingual place in Sweden - The International library in Stockholm (books in 137 languages, staff speaking at least 20 languages)!

Hi Jaymee, thanks for finding me on here. Did you get to see much of the show? We're still buzzing here. Over 200 people turned up on a dark winter's night so we're delighted. Pix now up on my website.

The Jekyll and Hyde of Writing

Writing and rewriting are two sides of the same coin but each takes a different kind of mindset to accomplish. Most folks think of writing when they imagine what writers do; scribbling creative characters, scenes; oozing creativity onto the page into the wee hours of the night. Beginning writers dive into…See More
