Originality and the fear of failure

I am not a new reader to the genre, but I am a new writer to it. I penned the roughest of drafts of my first Steampunk novel for Nanowrimo 2010. Since then I have been horribly afraid of going back to rewrite and edit.I am confident in the fashions, time period, and even settings, but I am concerned about my technical aspects. I am not an overly technical person, and therefore fear making huge mistakes. Someone said, read the genre and do what they do. Well, there again, I can't really use all…See More

Introduce yourself!
Karen L. Syed is the president and COO of Echelon Press, LLC. Every day is a new success story for her as she continues to grow herself and her business. She has seen seven of her own novels published (writing as Alexis Hart), along with numerous articles and short stories. As a former bookstore owner, she garnered a nomination from Publishers Weekly for their Bookseller of the Year award. She is committed to helping and encouraging everyone she comes in contact with to seek a healthier and more positive quality of life by reaching for their dreams.

Her newest fascination has taken root in the Steampunk industry. This tremendously interesting genre based in the Victorian era is helping to feed a minor obsession with the time period. She is currently embarking on her own Steampunk series called Petticoat Junction. With more than a quarter of a century experience in the book industry, she hopes this one will propel her into the bestseller category. Time will tell.
What do you hope to find at The Steampunk Writers & Artists Guild?
I've newly discovered genre. Love the reading, hope to hone my craft with writing aspect and interact with other experts and enthusiasts.

The Secret Notebook of Michael Faraday, my second novel in the Airship Flamel Advenstures Series is now available!

The book is a prequel to my first novel To Rule the Skies, although I think of it more as just coming first chronologically.  It follows the main character from my previous novel, Nicodemus Boffin, from his boyhood to about a decade before the events in To Rule the Skies. The synopsis:Nicodemus Boffin, a uncommonly clever boy…See More
