First Steampunk novel coming to a close :)

So my first Steampunk novel, which actually would be my debuting novel as my other novel, a YA time traveling book isn't ready yet as I'm agent-hunting for it...will hopefully be out September 15th. That's the goal. The goal is to be done by mid-September as I'd like to go to the Steamcon III in Seattle in October, and would love to have the book launched prior to that. So mid-September early October by the latestl, depending how long it takes my editor.

What do you guys feel is the best self-publishing method? I'm going to do Smashwords + Amazon + Lulu. But a bit nervous about the process, looks a little tricky with all the formatting...I'm hoping Smashwords is easy enough to do all the e-book formats.

Just a bit excited for it. The Zeppelin Odyssey. I'm half way through draft three, my least favorite part of the editing process lol. Then I'll send it to my editor ... and then it can be published!

Anyway, the main point of this post is: I'm shopping for Steampunk cover art.

I'd like to support my SWAG members, so any artists interested in a single commission? I'm on a budget so it'll probably be a simple picture of either my main character, a Cyborg prince, or of the Zeppelin itself and hopefully the Steam Circle on the spine.

So hit me up if you're interested. SWAG love forever!#amadork Or if any published writers have a cover artist they recommend, I'm open for suggestions!

Jinger Heaston at Siren Publishing has done the covers/artwork for my first 3 books. She rocks & loves Steampunk. You can email Siren and ask your question to be sent to her. I have no idea if she could do yours-she may be on contract. But I highly recommend her! You can take a peek at the cover of my upcoming release STEAMBLAST FROM THE PAST in my photos. Good luck in your search.Love, MW

Hey May!

Thanks for the recommendation.  I'll check her out. Not sure about contracts either but it wouldn't hurt to ask :)

I'm also thinking of looking on Craig's List and finding a cheaper artists. I want my book to be a 99 cent book so not sure how much sense a $200+ cover art makes...but we'll see. I have no idea how much these things cost lol.

STEAMBLAST FROM THE PAST - lovely title btw <3

I'm clueless on so many aspects of publishing... what part does the agent play if you're self-publishing?
Comment by Elaine Turner on August 22, 2011 at 8:48pm
Miss Raye, the agent plays no part if you are self-publishing. If you were looking at certain Indie Presses they might still require an Author to go through an Agency. @Clair, Craig's List is a FABULOUS place to find artists, editors and proof-readers (per OM Grey). She recommends putting an ad out on Craig's list w/ the price you are willing to pay for their work. So if all you can do is $75 so be it :-) I'm finding Google+ to be invaluable for meeting up and coming artists and VA. I'm interested in having my book turned into Audio, but I can't afford to pay a VA from the Actors Guild to do it. G+ has put me in contact w/ no fewer than six aspiring VA's & each have wonderful voices! Yay for cyber-space!

I self-published through Createspace with an indie author collective group. We have found some problems with Lulu and Smashwords, if authors want to leave those groups and go out on their own later.

@Elaine: Great idea on Craig's List! I might do this for illustrators for my Children's books or my next cover art if I don't get an agent for another book I'm working on finishing.

@Alison: Did you like Createspace? I was just going to do all of them to get the most exposure. Is this a wise investment?

As for the cover artist, luckily our very own Christopher Paul contacted me and so glad he did! I love his work and love that I get to work with a S.W.A.G. member :)

This has been such a fun experience! So happy I found Steampunk, or rather, Steampunk found me it seems lol.

Thanks for being so supportive and awesome guys!

Loving Createspace!

Just read those contracts really carefully. My publisher has tried to pick up some writers in the past, and clauses in the Lulu and Smashwords contracts have made it really difficult. My thought: Most people buy books on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, so use those two platforms. Then spend your time marketing. Just my two pence....

Congrats on the cover - that's fantastic! Can't wait to see it!

Thanks Alison! Christopher sent a sketch yesterday and they look fantastic, can't wait for the finished product. I'm def going to post on SWAG when finished :)

Glad you like Createspace! The only reason I wanted Lulu was because I want printed versions available as well. Can you have this option with Amazon, B&N and ibooks?

Comment by Alison DeLuca on August 27, 2011 at 5:55pm

Absolutely, although you have to pay for your own ISBN. Lulu gives you a free ISBN, but you can ONLY use it on Lulu - you can't use the number for Amazon, which leads to those contract difficulties later on. And let's face it - how many readers go shopping on Lulu?

If you live in Canada, I believe you can get free ISBN's, but in the US we have to pay out the nose, unfortunately.
