When I started writing I was worried that, as it is when I run a RP game, I'd have problems with developing character motivation. Assuming I could buffer that some with technology and science fiction, I set out to write a work of Steam punk/ science fantasy. I determined, at first, to make the machines the focus instead of characters. Originally, I was going to have only two main characters, but it didn't stay that way for long. I've learned a lot about the genre and writing in general. One thing is whether the stage is a coffee shop in some no-name town or the impossible submarine of a mad man, though there is a fair amount of focus on machines in Dixi Aethernaughts, characters make stories. I have also learned that the heart of steam punk is not about idol worship of technology. A struggle between humanity and technology underscores the whole affair. Just my thoughts on it.
