Yet another attempt at figuring out what steampunk is, or was, or could be

Last spring I was very interested in trying to outline what "steampunk" means, at least for my own writing. What I came up with was a division between a literary genre with certain recognizable elements and a social phenomenon with certain cultural and physical touchstones.

Automatic restaurant

This is a photo of an "automatic restaurant" in Stockholm in 1905. If anyone knows anything about this kind of restaurant I'd like to learn more. It seems they were quite popular one hundred years ago.
