Stormy weather and Dinosaurs on an airship

I am working on a new series of steam punk stories for children, set in Victorian London, and I am having trouble with the main character. I am trying to create a history for him and am struggling with two possible scenarios.

  1. He is the son of a watchmaker, but always had his head in the clouds turned his training towards building an airship instead of clocks, which earns him the scorn of his father. OR
  2. The son of a coal miner and inventor who builds a digging machine, but dies in a cave in.  He is a chip off the old block.

I am also having difficulty launching the fist story. I have two ideas.  The first, the main character is looking for a friend and winds up crashing on an island wracked by storms and an ancient storm making machine.

The second, involves a mad scientist bringing back dinosaurs as a weapon to use in the Victorian age.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How ancient is "ancient"? Is it the island of Aeolus? Perhaps Aeolus was not a supernatural character, but part of an ancient civilisation ... Atlantis, in fact, because Aeolus in mythology was the son of Poseidon.
