Manga Recommendations for Steampunk Enthusiasts

After watching Laputa, Howl's Moving Castle, and Steamboy, after finishing Fullmetal Alchemist and catching up with the latest release of D. Gray-Man, I find myself asking, "What else?" It is evident that I deal exclusively with mangas in this post. This is because while steampunk has been recognized as a hybrid genre that is versatile and multicultural, there is a rather blatant oversight of mangas and animes in spite of the astounding popularity and appeal of Howl's Moving Castle and…See More

Forgetfulness and Nostalgia

Nostalgia is a necessary thing, I believe, and a way for all of us to find peace in that which we have ccomplished, or even failed to accomplish. At the same time, if nostalgia precipitates actions to return to that fabled, rosy-painted time, particularly in one who believes his life to be a failure, then it is an empty thing, doomed to produce nothing but frustration and an even greater sense of failure."  (R. A. Salvatore, Stream of Silver) Nostalgia is one of the words that Steampunk feeds…See More

"Third time lucky... right, here we go... Can we be nostalgic for times we did not experience ourselves? No. Can we be nostalgic for something that never even existed, such as Steampunk times? No. But that doesn't invalidate the feelings ,or…"

Introduce yourself!
I am Lexi Orchestra; escapist; dreamer; reader. Im currently working on my MA thesis that explores the temporality and technology of steampunk novels for young adults. In my spare time I read, I drink tea, I write, and take photographs.
What do you hope to find at The Steampunk Writers & Artists Guild?
I guess I'm here because I want to know what other steampunk enthusiasts think. Overall I believe we're a group that is intensely self-aware of our identity and the development of the subculture.
How did you hear about us?
I was trying to find a video link for the steampunk panel on SLJ day.

"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past." --George Orwell, 1984
If we are to believe what George Orwell has said about living in the present to rule over the past and the future, then the present he speaks of is definitely not the age we are in, one where the current fashion is dominated by styles from at least two decades ago, or where cellphones have applications in the likes of Hipstamatic that digitally modify… Continue

So glad you found us, Lexi! Welcome to the Guild. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the temporality of steampunk novels for young adults! As a member of the International Society for the Study of Time, and a YA writer, I have a particular interest in that myself.
