As a real blue collar worker and left-labor populist, I am a devotee of writers like Eric Hoffer, Studs Terkel, Joe Bageant, and Howard Zinn. A viewpoint seldom found in a milieu where Lady This and Capt. That predominate. In contrast, my name elsewhere is EngineRmRaphi.
As an autodidact, I read voraciously. Late in life, I returned to college. I have degrees in history and botany (forest ecology minor) and an MA in theology.
I am a 5th generation Seattleite; as such, I am deeply anchored in the natural world.
Since I have actually worked on old steam engines, that is a particular attraction to the SP genre. But my major focus is what I see as something quite vital. Unlike Boomers, young people now cannot assume a better future. As others have noted, by rewriting the past, a better future is made possible.
What do you hope to find at The Steampunk Writers & Artists Guild?
General discussions on genre writing. Critiques of the various SP phenonema. Advice from other writers. Finding good proof-reading and editing. Tips on research; particularly regarding the accuracy of details. I do have both experience as an actual engine room crew member and a science degree, but technical advice is always valuable.
